Introduction:
Social studies is a course that involves exploring social behavior, human environment, social institutions and historical inheritance; these are subjects that associate with human life and the community in which man lives as a part of history, present, future, and his visions and hopes. Social sciences are concerned with study of man, his life, history, interactions, and his social, economic, political and cultural relationships.
The Department's objectives:
1. To enlighten students with information and facts such that they understanding the beauty and magnificence of Allah The Almighty's Creations in every aspect of their lives and environment.
2. To promote awareness of universal and geographical phenomena and their interpretation.
3. To recognize the knowledge and strengths of their Islamic nation, its' material and moral wealth and the basis of its honor; including social, economic and political problems.
4. To explore Islamic history and its greatness that our ancestors left behind in various fields.
5. To interpret the ancient and contemporary events that took place in some parts of
the Islamic world.
6. To help students to recognize the blessings in the surrounding environment.
7. To introduce students to the basis of social dealings and the fundamentals of
relationships between people and communities in Saudi Arabia.
8. To increase the awareness of problems that concerns the community, in particular Arab
and Islamic nation in general, its diagnosis and knowing the ways of solution.
9. To introduce students to important social, political, economic, security and intellectual
institutions.
10. To facilitate the development of student abilities in scientific research and the comprehension of current events and contemporary matters.
11. To confirm the Islamic perspective of the universe, man, life, and deepening of Islamic
concepts in contemporary theories.
12. The development of student abilities on observing, analysis, comparing, contrasting,
interpreting, and drawing and use of all types of maps.
13. To enhance student's sense of belonging to their country in particular, and their Islamic and Arabic nation in general.
The subjects taught by the department:
1-Geography:
It is concerned with the study of the earth's regions with special emphasis on human relationships and focusing on the relation between man and his environment, the ways of his interaction with it and the effect of this interaction. Therefore geography should be the study of man and earth together and not separately.
2- History:
History is concerned with the study of the past through several aspects whether social, cultural, economic or political. The study of history, when taking a nation's past, will present the successive generations reactive record from the stages of its struggle for unity or freedom or independence, also an interpretation of some of the social, political and religious problems which are rooted in the past.
3- National Education:
It is concerned with the study of relations which are arranged according to a judgment system, the molding of a good citizen that recognizes the work of social, economical, political and security institutions and those who perceive the problems that face our country. National education involves the analysis of the system and its explanation and ensures citizen accountabilities; therefore, they may include political sciences which discuss the study of government and study of the nation and contemporary political matters.
Elementary social studies is taught in Arabic following the Ministry of Education curriculum, High school students have the option to study social studies courses in English; World History, Geography and Civics and Saudi Society
